A person named D.E. Ballard emailed me recently on my PE Subway page and sent me this message:
In 1947 housing was scarce, and my parents and I (11-years-old) moved into a horrible, little shack of a house on the south side of 4th St and between Flower and Figueroa. A service station was on the corner of Figueroa next to us, run by two "old men," and a two or three-story apartment house rose on the east side of our dwelling. On the corner of Flower was a huge parking lot for city buses. At the back of the bus lot, between 4th and 5th, was a raised, round shaft to the subway. I would sit on the heavy chain link cover of the shaft and watch the subways run in the dark far below. It was like a mysterious and secret world to me. We always called them the P E Cars.
I never knew there was a shaft that poked out of the surface from the tunnel. Anyone ever took any pictures of this?
