The last time I traveled back from UCLA to Palms, I used the Super 12 line, which has a slightly different route from the ordinary 12 line, broken by somewhat fewer stops. It wasn't until I was nearly home that I noticed something very surprising in an urban transit bus: there were overhead luggage racks! Naturally these racks were completely devoid of coats, computer bags, or backpacks, undoubtedly because such a thing is so unexpected in this type of bus. Presumably everyone else, like me, had looked right at them without realizing they were there.
I think very highly of Santa Monica's bus system; it goes just about everywhere on the West Side. The buses are clean and operated as quickly and efficiently as possible given West Side traffic conditions. But actually giving people a place to put their stuff is almost above and beyond the call of duty.
Does anyone know if the luggage racks are being rolled out on all or most of the system's buses, or if this is just something we'll see on the Super routes?

Was the bus you were on a rapid colored bus? The luggage racks were a feature on the rapid 3 when it first opened as a option for travelers headed to LAX. The buses with the luggage racks now get shuffled around due to there being 3 different rapid lines. The rapid buses are also used sometimes on the super 12 (which is basically the same thing as a rapid line) |

The last 9 New Flyer buses delivered to BBB (#4091 to 4099) have luggage racks. Those buses were paid for by Playa Vista in 2006 and used exclusively to launch Rapid 3 service to LAX so BBB ordered them with luggage racks.
The older New Flyers that were repainted to launch Rapid 7 do not have luggage racks. The new NABI Rapid buses do not have luggage racks either.

I was referring to the 60 ft NABI... which doesn't have luggage racks. But I completely forgot about the new 40ft NABI. I haven't had the chance to ride one yet.  |
