LA does have funding coming in from Prop A & C. Yes, the gas tax would have "penalized" hybrid drivers as much as gas cars...but a car, is a car, is a car. Why should we charge a higher tax to an SUV compared to a hybrid? The downsize of buying a hybrid is the amount of gas the person has to spend...that's their problem. A hybrid still is a gas guzzler itself, just a little more economical.
I agree that more has to be done with the current taxes we pay California, and the problem therein lies with the Education lobby & the tax credits given to oil & hollywood companies. I fear with all the new school building in LA, more funds will be required for education and transportation is going to take another significant hit.
Governor Gray Davis was going to do the right thing, but unfortunately, people think "taxes are the devil" (thank you George Bush senior). Now, we propose bond spending, and guess what, we have to pay those bonds back. How much transportation money was paid to repay the bonds?

A hybrid car still eats space on our roads especially with a lone driver. Hyrbrids are the solution to foreign oil consumption but not traffic mitigation, especially with newer model hybrids being much larger sedans based on current models like the Camry and Maxima. Besides, it's the hyrbrids that are clogging up the carpool lanes that are to be used for more important purposes, carrying express buses like Metro Express and Commuter Express.

While most of my brain hates government interference, I would love to see legislation that said that any freeway improvement project that uses state money above a certain amount include funds for transit along the freeway. So if you want to build more lanes on the 405, you have to provide a dedicated ROW for transit on that stretch of the freeway.

The Westside meeting last night at Emerson MS was pretty good. Good remarks, Damien. No angry rants from "concerned" homeowners like at the Expo Phase II meeting. One of the only negative speakers was the monorail guy who just wanted people to have "an open mind" but then said digging got you nowhere.... hmm.......

^ Yeah, I was at that meeting too. By my count, there was 19 people for building rail, one person on the fence, and one person opposed.
If anyone else has made it to any of these meetings, it would be great to hear a report.

I went to last night's Purple Line (sorry, "Westside Extension blah blah project") meeting. It was going to be the last one, but apparently one more has been added at the Pan Pacific rec center.
Just like the first meeting, the vast majority of people were enthusiastically for a rail solution. Most of these people wanted a subway. But there were also four pro-monorail speakers. It's looking like the monorail folks are making a real concerted effort to rally support at these meetings.
My impression is that these people are more interested in the monorail as sexy futuristic train then in practical transit issues. For me, the primary issues are speed, capacity, and feasibility. Monorail trains are slower and smaller than subway trains. And, the monorail is less feasible because every homeowner's group along the route will fight to kill the project.

My guess is the monorail people can't get enough of Disneyland and want scenic rides on our streets.

I'm pro-transit and I would fight against the Monorail! This is California, land of sunshine. No one really wants a stinkin monorail blocking their sunshine.

Monorail - transportation mode of the future, whose time has long since passed.

After the Monorail presentation at the Alt. Car Expo on Saturday, October 20 at Santa Monica Airport, Tom Rubin came by The Transit Coalition booth to visit. Tom had just come from the one hour presentation from the monorail advocates and he was all fired up. He summed up to monorail folks thusly: Faith Based Transit
I'll leave it at that.
