I'm kind of new to the BRU debate.
Are they the same as New York's Straphangers Campaign?

I don’t know much about the Straphangers Campaign in NYC, but from what I read on the Straphangers website, I must say no! The BRU doesn’t really lobby for better transit in Los Angeles. It just cries transit racism and tries to stop any real improvements from being made in LA. The Transit Coalition is the real transit advocacy group that is pushing to make public transit better in LA.

No. The New York Straphangers cares about RAIL and BUS service. The BRU in L.A. is against rail and wants the Blue Line removed.

The Straphangers Campaign ( www.straphangers.org/ , message board: www.straphangers.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi ) cannot be compared to the Baiters of Race Union. We, at the Straphangers Campaign, advocate for better bus and subway service. We do not suscribe to the obviously ridiculous notion that all rail projects is racist, which happens to be the official position of the BRU, and we don't brand anyone who disagrees with us as racist, which happens to be what they do best. They have no mandate to refer to themselves as a credible advocacy group, and therefore they are an insult to legitimate advocacy groups like the Straphanger's Campaign, with their immature tactics, random cries of racism, hypocrisy, and their potential to compormise the mobility of the people of Los Angeles with their blind opposition of any proposed rail project.

"Baiters of Race Union"...I like that! Mind if we use that little moniker in the future? Thanks!

Go right ahead. They could also be known as the Los Angeles County Communist Party.

That would be an insult to Communists
it seems like lots of cities have transit advocate organizations but I haven't heard of any as scary fanatical as our BRU. aren't we lucky?!

Hey hey hey ... communist countries just happen to have some of the best rail transit systems in the world. Look at the Moscow subway, where the stations are tourist attractions in themselves and the subway has a daily ridership of 8.5 million. If only LA had a communist rail system!

L.A. certainly has the ridership for it, and rail ridership has held steady in countries that were formerly communist, so it's not totalitarianism that forced people to ride. The auto makers just want you to believe that.
