Okay, I think this will be a hot controversial topic I read in the paper this morning: Making the main route into LAX a toll route to (partially) discourage people from driving to the airport. Per the article, the toll structure will be similar to either the 91 Express Toll Lanes or the I-15 Express Lanes: The higher the congestion, the more expensive it will be to go into the airport.
Per the article, Metro wants to develop plans for toll roads in Los Angeles County over the next three years and the airport toll lanes is an idea "thrown around privately by politicians."
We know the airport is traffic clogged and we know that it still hungers for better public transit connections and transportation choices.
Any opinion? I think for starters, the least that can be done is expand the Green Line to LAX, expand and promote the FlyAway Bus, and offer the LAX-Union Station Metrolink service via the Harbor Subdivision.
If toll lanes are a must, I think a full sized toll plaza should be built (instead of just a few toll booths), with through-lanes for paying FasTrak users, busses, and taxis. Studying has to be done, but like other toll systems, the toll plaza can either be at the airport's entrance or exit route. Hopefully, this will prevent traffic from overflowing onto other surface streets as addressed in the article. But as I said, other transportation options also need to be addressed, or the cars will keep coming.
I think San Diego County has a good system going as an example. The I-15 coming out of Escondido is a parking lot during the morning rush hour... Right now, to reduce the traffic, they're building carpool/toll lanes in the median of the I-15 near Escondido, but they are also planning on giving commuters the choice to ride frequent express buses along the corridor with station stops at major activity/employment centers. Don't worry, the stations themselves are proposed to be near the activity centers, not in the median of the freeway!
Any opinon on the LAX toll lanes as written in the article?
