I was listening to the Podcast for KCRW's Which Way LA Where Roger Snoble was to talk about the budget cuts and MTA. When in the first segment, while talking about LAX expansion Denny Schneider, President of the Alliance for a Regional Solution to Airport Congestion, said what a travesty it would be to remove the LAX In-N-Out to allow for North Runway Expansion. "Denny Schneider : ......, it will devastate the business community that is finally recovering after 25 years since the previous expansion. But I think I'd rather Focus..... Warren Olney: But before you say that go further. Which business community and where and in what way will be devastated? Denny Schneider: There is a runway safety requirement at the end of each runway and this safety zone will encompass 1/3rd of the Westchester business district all the way along Sepulveda. And for those of you who love In-N Out Burger, It will be gone. Warren Olney: Okay, Is In-N-Out Burger absolutely important to the economy of Weschester? Denny Schneider: Well i wouldn't say it is but there are a lot of people including some of the commissioners who would bemoan the fact that it was gone." In all fairness, Denny Schneider is a long-time Expo and Green Line supporter, and one who supports getting the Green Line up to its previously-approved destination of Playa Vista or Marina Del Rey.
In all fairness (again), if the In-N-Out Burger were removed there would be a lot of complaints from people throughout the Westside, and the relocation of the north runway into the Westchester Business District would probably have a lot of people unhappy, indeed.
The northern runway might have to be relocated, but it's different than when people who live next to a freeway or rail right of way complain. The people were there first, and it's an expansion of LAX at a time when there is a loud cry to expand instead at Ontario and other airports.
