One of the new Breda cars was out on the Gold Line this afternoon--705 was in non-revenue testing, leaving Sierra Madre Villa just ahead of the 1:40pm train. Anybody seen 703 or 704? There were three visible in the yard when I came back from downtown, but two could have been the original test cars.

Which ones do you think look better, the siemens or the breda?
What paint job are they gonna get, or are they just gonna leave them grey? I never seen the Bredas myself, other than in pictures. I think it would be cool to color code the trains or something.
I like the Breda's just fine. BTW the MTA calls the paint job silver instead of grey. IIRC they announced a couple of years ago that they were going to rebrand the entire rail fleet silver, so that's the color that I think that they will stay.

From the pic, if you look at the breda on its side, it looks sorta like an HRV. Probably because of the streaks along the side. BTW, is the red line getting new cars? I think its about time..
Yeah, I think those grooves in the steel are called "fluted". This was very common with the cars made by Budd like this NYCT R32 captured by the late Date Angerville.
And I haven't heard that the red line is getting new cars yet. The MTA did announce a few months back that they would be getting a mid-life overhaul and would be getting at least some updated technology. I made a thread about it somewhere in the red line forum.
The rail cars will first operate on the Metro Gold Line in late 2005 or early 2006.
You're right, I'm wrong. Many apologies. I should have done my research before opening my big fat mouth (I'm good at that, you know).
My source of information was from the folks working in the field. The Breda cars are not received in a "turn key" condition. Lots of hardware and software installation and testing is required before they can be placed in revenue service. It's been almost 2.5 yrs since 701 was delivered, and it's still not ready. I think we can all agree on this: MTA = Might Take Awhile.
The latest rumor is that the blueline will be keeping the Nippon Sharyos, with Breda cars added to the line. It will be a mixed fleet operation. The Breda has a 3 mode ATP system that allows it to operate on the Blue, Green or Gold lines.
I remember right after the first Breda car was delivered to MTA, I had the opportunity to talk to some of the Breda techs. The way they told it, the first two Breda cars (701 & 702, I believe) were to be the prototype cars. All the bugs would be worked out of them, all the testing done, and when fininally accepted, would be used as a "pattern" for the remainding cars. So the rest of the cars would built just like the first two, and be ready to run as soon as delivered.
The P2550s should be able to run on all of our light rail lines. It's most likely to run on the Green Line, and is probably stored at the Blue Line yard if there's a lack of space at the Manhattan Beach Green Line yard. Cars can be transferred between the Blue and Green at Rosa Parks station, you'll notice a fenced off incline in the I-105 median.
7 or 8 bread cars were sitting in the Gold Line Yard until Oct 2007, but I looked at there few days ago, some of the cars were disappeared. How do they transferred them from the Gold Line yard to another place? There's no rail tracks between the blue line and Gold Line.
Thanks for the follow up. That's make sense but I didn't know that they use the same rail gauge as Amtrak/UP. And the map you showed me, they could open another red line station on 4st bridge. just thought.

There was one of the new Breda's (701) in the blue line yard for a week or so last month, but it's been gone for a few weeks now. I've seen one in the blue line yard on many occasions but I've never seen them testing yet on the blue line. I've never seen them testing on the gold line either, but I rarely ride that line. I wonder where they go when they disappear from the gold line yard?
