Completion of Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR)

Metro has prepared the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) for the Canoga Transportation Corridor, the proposed northern extension of the Metro Orange Line. This extension would connect the Metro Orange Line Canoga Station with the Chatsworth Metrolink Station.

The FEIR is comprised of the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) plus the newly published FEIR Addendum. The FEIR Addendum contains responses to comments made on the DEIR plus a summary of the Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) and the Mitigation, Monitoring and Reporting Plan (MMRP).

On Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 1 pm, the Metro Board's Planning and Programming Committee will consider a recommendation to certify the FEIR. This meeting will be held in the Board Room at Metro headquarters, One Gateway Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90012 (adjacent to Union Station). Public comment is limited to one minute per speaker.

Can we hope that the structures, etc., will be built compatible with future conversion for rail utilization?

The river crossing bridges for the Los Angeles River between Reseda and Balboa stations and the Tujunga Wash between Valley College and Laurel Canyon stations should have already been built to handle conversion to LRT as is the busway itself. It's a shame that Chatsworth would get the busway grade separated instead of the more heavily used part of the Orange Line between Reseda and North Hollywood stations; even transferring between the Orange and Red Line is done at-grade at the crosswalk on Lankershim.

The over-crossing is primarily to get the busway over the Metrolink tracks. The geometry and operation of a busway at-grade over busy railroad tracks simply would not be feasible or acceptable to the CPUC.
