An item of interest; on July 2, Metro released its preliminary recommendations for the 2009 Call for Projects. Project F3441 caught my attention: Requested by Los Angeles County: Construct a new Metrolink station on the San Bernardino Line to serve the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California (LAC+USC) Medical Center. In the category of "Transit Capital," Metro received 44 project applications, only the top 18 of which it could fund. This Metrolink project ranked #35 and therefore will receive no Call for Projects money. Has anyone heard any other discussion of this project? It would be interesting if this second Metrolink/El Monte Busway station comes to be.

I often wondered why they didn't build a station at USC. This would be a great station for Metrolink. And for many people who visits County USC.

If they add a Metrolink/El Monte Busway station I think they would get rid of the current El Monte Station. I mean That's just way to close together.

The proposed station we are discussing is the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center station. It is currently served by the El Monte Busway (which runs from Union Station to El Monte), but is not in the city of El Monte, but rather two stops west of El Monte.

I love the idea of a LAC+USC station on Metrolink.
it dovetails rather nicely with my theory that Metrolink will inevitably evolve from its current role as a diesel commuter Rail Operation of Unusual Size into something more closely resembling Caltrain — which is, of course, also currently undergoing its own transformation into something resembling the electrified East Coast commuter rail operations.
if this station is built, it would be closer to Union Station than the CSULA station, which would be a bit obsessive by current Metrolink standards, but wouldn't be that far off the mark for some Caltrain stops, if I remember correctly...

As I'm reading about this and recollecting on my trips on the El Monte Busway, just past this proposed stop, under Marengo Street there looks like there's an abandonded Right of way there that could be of some use in the distant future as a means to have service into Hazard Park, Lincoln Park, El Sereno and Alhambra.

That abandoned right of way is the old PE Huntington Drive mainline, which joined the San Bernardino mainline (part of which is now the Metrolink line) to cross into Downtown on a bridge that I believe was demolished when the 101 was built. I believe the Metro bus yard by the tracks was originally a PE train yard.

Yes, Metro Bus Division 10 is located there I believe the right-of-way between the bus division and the busway is wide enough for 3 or 4 tracks. Not to sidetrack the conversation of the proposed Metrolink Station but that right-of-way has some potential either as a rail line or even a dedicated bike path/pedestrian trail to link El Sereno/Lincoln Park and those areas to the station.

Back in the PE days, there was a station near today's County-USC Busway station called Echandia Junction. Originally, it was where the old line to Pasadena branched off. When the Pasadena Short Line was completed (via Huntington Dr. and Fair Oaks Ave.) the old line was cut back to South Pasadena, ending at Mission and Fair Oaks. In the mid-30's the line was abandoned, with a 1000-foot stub remaining running between Echandia and General Hospital, this was operated as a shuttle between Sierra Vista Locals and the hospital for a few years, finally quitting in 1942. I'd have to recheck my references, but PE may not have stopped "limited" trains (e.g., those going to Monrovia or Pasadena) at Echandia, and this would be analogous to Metrolink not stopping at County-USC. And yes, the Metro bus division is on the site of PE's Macy Street yard and shops.

If I remember, I was at a rail conference a while ago and Michael McGinley, the retired Chief Engineering person for Metrolink, said something to the effect, we had a chance for this station when they rebuilt that 2nd main in this section.
The could have moved he 2nd main over to create a single platform in the center, directly below the passenger bridge that goes from the bus station to the hillside towards the hospital. Simple stair/elevator up to the bridge and it would be done... I can not remember what his reason for why this did not happen a the time...
