There should be a line between Lincoln Heights and Boyle Heights which would create a shortcut between the two sections of the Gold Line. It would start at the Lincoln/Cypress Gold Line station and run down Ave 26/Daly/Marengo until Soto St, with stops at Broadway, Main (or Alhambra/train tracks if a line to San Gabriel is ever built) and County USC (Marengo/State). There could possibly be a detour east on Main to reach Lincoln Park before turning south to County USC via Eastlake or San Pablo. At Soto, the line would turn south with stations at Wabash, Cesar Chavez, 1st (Gold Line), 4th or 6th (Roosevelt High School/Hollenbeck Park), Whittier and Olympic (Sears). A possible extension from there is to continue east on the Metrolink Riverside Line, until Telegraph, then turn south with stations at the Citadel, Commerce Casino and Commerce Metrolink (via a bridge over the 5). On the north end, it could be extended to Cypress Park, Atwater Village and Glendale and/or Griffith Park/LA Zoo.

So basically, a North-south corridor?
