Hello Southland Transit Supporters: The Transit Coalition will host its monthly Dinner Meeting on Tuesday, March 22, featuring the return of Arthur T. Leahy, Chief Executive Officer of Metro, who will update attendees on what has been happening at Metro. Here is your chance to learn, listen and get some answers. Our speaker may not answer every question, but you'll learn a lot about the way Metro is changing. Find out first hand by joining us. First @ 6:55 p.m. we will have introductions and go over some of the latest transit developments. At 7:05 p.m, we will start the program, so make a goal to be there at the start at 6:43 p.m. Art will speak and answer questions until 8:10 p.m. and then we will cover the business of other transit activities in Southern California. This is your Open Invitation from The Transit Coalition to join us for our Tuesday, March 22, 2011 meeting at Philippe the Original restaurant in Chinatown from 6:43 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. At this gathering, we will discuss current transportation developments and present a recap of the other transit-related projects underway throughout Southern California. There will be other reports at the meeting such as Amtrak and Metrolink and the 30/10 Plan, as well as a review of cuts to transit and state and urban rail service. Also, we will talk about Expo and some other projects such as the Downtown Connector and Crenshaw. To attend, see our map if you need directions. We generally gather downstairs by the cash register, then retire to the meeting rooms upstairs. Do not be fooled by the signs that say the meeting rooms are closed, as they don't apply to us. If you have trouble locating the meeting, call 818-367-1661. Pass the word. If you or anyone is interested, get them there Tuesday, March 22. Also, note: RSVP. If we know you are coming, we will look for you, so you don't stay lost from us. Note: If you want to get the an e-mail meeting reminder directly, write and you can get on the list for future events. To make reservations, write us. Subject: Dinner Reservation Just leave your first/last name, e-mail and phone number. Please pass this e-mail along to anyone who might be interested in joining us. Call if you have any questions. Thanks, Bart Reed About The Transit Coalition: The Transit Coalition is a 501[c](3) non-profit whose goal is to increase Transit Options and Mobility in Southern California by mobilizing citizens to press for sensible public policy to grow our bus and rail network. Will my TAP questions need to be put on the back burner for a while longer? Matt has been difficult to book as a speaker, to say the least. He was booked as our January speaker and then, just one week before, he informed us that he would be out of town and unable to speak. We then agreed to March. In late February, after our monthly meeting, he again said he would be out of town in March and has agreed to come in April. He is willing to send someone who reports to him, but why go down the food chain when I can get the agency CEO? At the last meeting, Art Leahy was talking about the service changes and adjustments. Now that these changes have been presented and publicly vetted with results announced to the Sector Councils, Art is willing to come back for an hour of Questions and Answers. I can tell you that Art makes a serious effort to adjust things that are wrong at Metro, but he likes to hear from everyone else and there is a chance he will fix or address an issue that could make a difference for everyone. I hope to see you and many of the other folks that read this board, but haven't come out to meet the rest of us.

I won't be able to make it. Could someone ask Mr. Leahy about where the new Light Rail and Heavy Rail service hours will be going? I know that is a rail operations question, but in the context of the LA Times article I'm sure he has discussed the details of the service changes.
I recall that back in 2008 we believed that the Blue Line would have more frequent service extended all the way to the Transit Mall at rush hour (instead of having half of the trains turn around at Willow). Is that happening with this service change, or when Expo starts?
Also, those of us in Long Beach have bene wondering, has there been any progress with better cooperation between LB Transit, Long Beach DOT, and Metro? Specificially: 1) Does LB Transit have a schedule for starting to use TAP? 2) Have Metro or LB Transit discussed a Rapid bus route, on Long Beach Blvd, Atlantic Blvd, 7th Street, PCH, or something? 3) Will the Blue Line ever get signal priority in Long Beach? This would save 1/3 of the time on each trip thru our city.
Finally, with Long Beach updating their Bike Plan, and Los Angeles and LA County making new bike plans, has Metro been working with the cities and county to integrate the buses and trains better with bikes? Specifically, are there plans for more bike parking at the new Expo stations, and at Rapid bus stops? Will buses get 3-bike racks? Will Metro continue to provide heavily subsidized, free parking lots, instead of charging a market price for car parking?

Here's the video of the March meeting with Art Leahy. We had such a large turnout that I didn't have much room myself so I apologize for some unsteadiness in the video. YouTube as of 10:30am needs to process the video but it should be available soon. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YvnmL9esBY
