The new track designated 1A will start operation on Monday 4/4/11 Metrolink Service #685 leaving for LAUS at 7:55 AM.
For the moment, only 10 existing trains that already start or end at this station will use the new track 1A.
Going northbound are #685-687 (both LAUS) and #800-804-810 (Inland Empire)
Ending at 1A will be #807-682-809-684-688

How long is the new section of track? Is this a third track? I thought there was already 2 at this station.

I'm bad at estimating distance but I'll guess the new stub is about 1 - 1 1/4 miles. 1A is the new 3rd track used only for Metrolink.

Here is a quick diagram of track improvements that have been made as part of the Laguna Niguel Turnback Facility project: You can see it is now a fairly robust facility, with convenient train storage locations along all of Track 1A and on the stub end of Track 1. EDIT: Track 1A is not yet continuous between CP Solow and CP Crown. A new bridge needs to be constructed for that third track.

What did trains that terminate or originate or Laguna Niguel do previously?
Also, I heard that Metrolink is going to lower station to station fares on this corridor (Fullerton-Laguna Niguel) when service is ramped up. The fare will be comparable to bus fares, as the rumor goes.

They also approved a $7 day pass that includes bus and Metrolink OC service. The current day pass for OCTA is $4. Not too shabby if the buses can be timed to meet the trains. If the day passes have Rail 2 Rail, that would be awesome.

If the day passes have Rail 2 Rail, that would be awesome. That's a great deal, considering the current price of a Metrolink ticket. Metro needs to work out a similar deal in LA county, so we can get enough ridership to justify frequent, all-day service.

Metro needs to work out a similar deal in LA county, so we can get enough ridership to justify frequent, all-day service. Metrolink has a $10 weekend pass good for all-weekend anywhere on the system. But I doubt you're going to see that on weekdays, much less a $7 pass. LA County is much bigger than Orange County. $7 for a round-trip between Lancaster and Palmdale, plus connecting transit, on a weekday at that, would be absurd.

Lancaster and Palmdale are too far, true. But Metro could have a deal within the main Metro service area (Sylmar to Norwalk, and Chatsworth to El Monte), where you could theoretically ride a Metro bus with a day pass for $6 (soon to be $5). Perhaps the day pass would only be good off-peak (or in reverse direction at peak times), when the trains are not full anyway; this would be free for Metrolink, and would actually add a little bit of revenue, while possibly saving Metro from running a few buses or trains. In the long term, Metro and Metrolink should have an integrated fare system, based on distance or zones, so that people can take the most efficient option.
