I'm sure everyone here remembers the weekend closure of the 405 a couple of weeks ago, and how smoothly everything went. News helicopters which had been slated to relay images of widespread chaos and gridlock, ascended all the same to show us what we already knew: nothing was happening. And, as an interesting publicity stunt, Jet Blue sold $4 tickets from Long Beach Airport to Bob Hope. A lot of airlines make this flight as part of a loop between some city in the East and these two local airports, but they don't ordinarily sell tickets for the LB/BUR leg.
Given the rigors of airport security these days, I'm willing to bet that one could make the trip faster by taking the Blue Line up to 7th Street, then the Red/Purple line to LAUS, and then Metrolink to Bob Hope. Metrolink does run enough trains on Saturday that it would be feasible. If only I'd thought of doing it on that weekend, taking a few photos on the way, and publishing them on my blog!

Long Beach Airport is not really near the Blue Line. This trip would take quite a while as you would need to bus it over to West Long Beach to get the Blue Line unless you are assuming a start at downtown Long Beach. Also, Burbank Airport is running a shuttle from the North Hollywood Station, so it may be faster to go up the Red Line instead of trying to time the Metrolink Train.

Long Beach Airport is not really near the Blue Line. True enough; but if it's a race between the airplane and public transit, let's stipulate that each contestant would have been allowed to leave at the appropriate place for them. The air traveler starts at the airport, and the transit rider starts at the Blue Line terminus. However, the flying traveler's clock starts running as soon as they enter the terminal building.

This was already done on Twitter during carmaggedon. @garyridesbikes did the public transit route and came in 2nd behind the Wolfpackhustle laist.com/2011/07/16/a_challenger_rises_on_foot_public_t.php
