Now that the graded separation project at Jeffrey in Irvine has been finished at least a few months ago, a new project start at the next major street south of Jeffrey at Sand Canyon. At first, all you noticed were some utility relocations. Now you can see where the temporary track will be placed. Also, there has been a gradual accumulation of heavy construction equipment at this site.
Going further south, there is a new stub just north of the Laguna Niguel station from south of Oso Parkway to the north Aliso Creek bridge. Track #2 was closed for a couple of weeks due to the construction a couple of months back.
Even further south, the updated safety features in San Juan Capistrano at a couple of small residential streets at Zanja and Oso Road seems to have been completed.
Immediately south at SJC station, selective rail ties were replaced at the siding immediately south of the station.
Keep on double tracking....
Immediately south of Laguna Niguel, just before crossing into SJC, it's only a single track with an occasional siding going into SD County. Once you hit SJC city limits, there was a church Rancho Capistrano that was owned by the Robert Schuller family until their finances went south - well you know that part of the story. The purchasers of the property wanted to turn the property into a retirement community. All seemed to go well until the PUC said they couldn't continue to use the existing private rail crossing to get onto the property. It amounted to no access - no development. The story never showed up in the OC Register but appeared in the weekly Capistrano Dispatch. Sorry I don't have the exact link. The city made a deal that they will allow double tracking down to Zanja which is still about 1/4 mile short of the station if they can gain alternative access through the city of Laguna Niguel The city is still adamant that there will not be double-tracking through the station.
Anyway, it's getting late. I'll try to find that link -later
