I agree. I think Metro has massively underprojected ridership on Crenshaw. 16,400 riders.

I agree. I think Metro has massively underprojected ridership on Crenshaw. 16,400 riders. I'm in the opposite camp and think the Crenshaw Line ridership will be terrible. Wouldn't be surprised if it is only 15k, which is horrific for a $2B+ rail line. I hope I am wrong. I just don't see the destinations here. Where are people going to work on this line? There is no airport connection right now either. The ride to Downtown LA from Inglewood is going to be very very long with an ugly transfer to Expo to boot. Crenshaw bus ridership isn't even that great to begin with. The only thing I keep hearing positive about this line is that it goes through the main African American area of SoCal. That is great and all, but I don't think that translates to ridership. Even if the ridership is transit dependent (which Crenshaw mostly is not), that has limitations. The East LA Gold Line goes through transit dependent neighborhoods but has the lowest ridership across the system.

South LA is easily the most transit dependent region of LA, bolstered by the regular bus grid and early development of the Blue and Green lines. It helps that the neighborhoods of Leimert Park, Hyde Park and Inglewood-near-downtown are developed with high-density housing. Expo's crappy capacity and the lack of a northern extension will be what limits ridership on the line.

Expo's crappy capacity and the lack of a northern extension will be what limits ridership on the line. It isn't very dense. Pretty much the entire length of Crenshaw from the Harbor Sub to Expo is surrounded on both sides by single family housing neighborhoods. There are some plans to develop multifamily housing around the line on Crenshaw, but there is strong community opposition to those efforts.

A good 25% of the residential zones along that particular stretch are developed with apartments. I didn't even mention the Jungle just west of baldwin hills crenshaw plaza. Another thing that might not be as obvious from google maps is that many apparent single-family houses are actually duplexes, making those parts as dense as your average row house neighborhood in the eastern US.

Understand about the apartments near baldwin hills. Probably should not call them the Jungle. Just saying.

Probably should not call them the Jungle. Just saying. I know that's what it used to be called. Now it's called "Baldwin Village".

I know crenshaw pretty well. Never have I heard the jungle called baldwin village in real life. Ill admit, Jungle is a received term; i've never met anyone from there who could attest to it being called baldwin village recently. A quick google search shows no businesses bearing the name there, as if it were a popularly used term.

LA City Transportation Committee just approved Bonin's motion to give signal priority to the Expo Line. Full vote before the entire City Council expected in a week or two.

Just in Bonin's district (West LA) or the entire line? And it really should be signal preemption instead of mere priority. But baby steps...

Has to be the whole line; the only grade crossing in his district is Barrington, which already has gates.
