I live in Palms and I'd like to be able to go out at night and get home with a reliable bus. However, I've had some issues with the routes in the Westside:
1) There's no 24-hour north-south bus between Fairfax and the beach. If I want to get from Westwood to Palms, for example, neither Santa Monica (12) nor Culver City (6) have late night service. If I'm on the 20 or the 4 after they stop, then I'll have to go to I think that the 233 should be made 24 hours with the buses after the 6 stops running going all the way to LAX. Also, it'd be a good idea to extend the 761 to LAX to eliminate the required transfer and have a limited stop alternative to the 6.
2) When I've taken the 33 from downtown, it's made unnecessary layovers around Olympic, Vermont and Western (the longest) which increase the time it takes to get home. I realize this is because it's ahead of schedule, but they should realize that there's less traffic at 1 AM and adjust the schedule.
3) When I've taken the 217 back from Hollywood, it always gets to Venice right after the 33 has passed so that I have to wait the longest time possible. I've actually walked and the bus didn't catch up to me until a couple blocks before I was home!
4) The Sunset Strip is supposed to be a late-night hot spot, but the bus south from there (105) stops before midnight! There is already 24-hour service on this line between Vernon and Leimert Park, so these buses might as well go all the way to West Hollywood.

I guess if you were to use late night bus service, carrying a bike would be helpful.

We have no buses late night b/c we need the roads for cars. That's unfortunately how LA works. Cars # 1. We should have some bus only lanes on major corridors, then people would be moving. But, we can't do that, b/c "americans love their cars" IMHO...we are forced to love our cars b/c we make public transportation inefficient and inconvenient. Great job U.S. politics!

oh yeah I feel your pain, plus I've had plenty of "interesting" encounters on the 33 late night...
