A good point...which is why we need first-rate alternatives like the Expo Line. Asking someone ELSE to take mass transit is stupid and counterproductive...and arguably irresponsible and immoral.
The RIGHT way to promote mass transit is to have such a happy and attractive alternative is to have an Expo Line or other line that is so awesome that these drivers would (in the same, understandable me-first approach that is fundamental to human nature) all pull off at Venice or La Cienega and go Downtown via the Expo Line instead.
Dunno 'bout y'alls, but I'm interested in trying to get a line that I would use, and to heck with traffic (let someone else drown, I'd want the nice train instead!).

Back in the 20th Century, when Southern California voters first started voting YES on bond issues and tax increases for rail transit construction, my secret suspicion was that many of the yes votes came from motorists who hoped that enough drivers would take the train so that they could travel on less-congested freeways.

well, let's face it: "Some Other Bozo"-ism runs rampant in this country, not just where transit is concerned, but in regards to recycling, conservation and all sorts of "social contract" issues where we're ALL supposed to pitch in, but there's no legal requirement that we do so. why else would there be so much litter around?
one of the advantages of rail is that it doesn't have the stigma that buses have- whether this is fair or deserved or not doesn't matter... the stigma still exists. logically, building rail should eliminate some of that "Some Other Bozo" stigma, but obviously it still isn't enough for some..
it doesn't surprise me one bit that there were "Some Other Bozo" voters supporting transit in the '80s, there still are!
(and, of course we all know the acronym for "Some Other Bozo-ism" is S.O.B.)

Well all I can say is, "I'm Proud to be that Bozo". And all the rest of us Bozo's will feel so much smarter and better off than the Buffoons who will pay $5.00 a gallon of gas to maintain their suburban lifestyle. As long as there are bozos like us who will make choices and sacrifices, our country holds some hope to defy the Oil monopolies and Gas mongers.
