Here's some pictures I took on the Acura L.A. Marathon Bike Tour last week (I pulled over to take most of the pics, heh):
All Marathon participants got to ride free on the Metro, and my Red and Blue line trains to the Exposition Park area were full of bikes.
And the bombs bursting in air...by the dawn's early light -- A fireworks display over the Coliseum kicks off the Bike Tour.
Over 16,000 cyclists queue up to the starting line behind the Coliseum (the starting line is actually behind the fence next to the old Olympic Swim Stadium - it took 30 minutes from where this photo was taken to get there!)
After navigating through a bit of South Central, the bikers see the skyline south of Downtown.
The Bike Tour gets on Figueroa, passing the Staples Center.
After passing through the Fashion District, it's on towards the Eastside as the bikes climb the Olympic Blvd. bridge over the Los Angeles River.
The bikers head towards the newly-risen sun over Boyle Heights as the Sears Building on Olympic and Soto is silhouetted in the background.
My personal highlight of the Bike Tour - the majestic, cloudless, smogless view of the Downtown skyline and the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains from the 6th Street Viaduct over the L.A. River. Cyclists not only "Oooh"ed and "Aaah"ed, but they pulled over for several photo opportunities!
Cyclists on the 6th St. Viaduct.
Let's see that beautiful view just one more time.
After passing by Downtown, Westlake, Koreatown, the Byzantine-Latino Quarter and Pico-Union, the Bike Tour returns to Exposition Park. The future Exposition light rail corridor is seen on the right, Here the route slowed to a crawl as paramedics tended to a cyclist who reportedly suffered a heart attack just yards from the finish line.
Riders queue up for their medals and are treated to a festival with live music, free snacks, water, coffee and Gatorade, and concessions between the Museum of Natural History and the Coliseum.
One of the lead runners passes by the Coliseum.
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum - the heart of all Los Angeles Sports...Home of the 1932, 1984 and hopefully 2016 Olympic games!
USC's sparkling new Galen Center, where USC's Basketball team Fights On!
The lead Marathon pack passes by Adams Blvd at Figueroa St as the church bells of nearby St. Vincent de Paul ring for the runners.
Hundreds of people await a Blue Line train at 7th St/Metro Center at around 10 a.m. (the winner hadn't even crossed the finish line yet). Kenyan runner Fred Mogaka may have won the XXIInd Los Angeles Marathon, but the real winner of the day was the Metro.
BTW my time on the Bike Tour course was 1:45. Aside from stopping to take pictures, I did not dismount once from my bicycle!
