Here's some pics I took of New Orleans' legendary streetcars on my visit to the Crescent City last month: New Orleans' St. Charles Ave. Line Streetcar. The St. Charles cars are the oldest streetcars currently in operation in the U.S. Interior shot of the St. Charles streetcars. I was lucky to stumble upon the St. Charles Line shops on my last night in New Orleans! This is one of the newer streetcars on the newly-resurrected Canal St. Line. This line just opened last year. Aside from the bright red paint, these cars are actually designed to be identical in look to the older St. Charles Line cars, except that these cars offer modern amenities like air conditioning and ADA wheelchair lifts. A structure on the roof of the new cars houses the HVAC equipment. Interior shot of Canal St. Line cars. The Canal St. Line at night. Another new line, the Riverfront Line, uses the same cars as the Canal St. Line. And if you are curious about "A Streetcar Named Desire," the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (NORTA) plans their next streetcar line to be built along Rampart St/St Claude Ave, which passes by Desire St. They do call this the "Desire Corridoe Streetcar Project."
