I had a chance to browse through OCTA's Long Range Transportation Plan tonight. On top of a bunch of freeway expansion projects, I found some interesting transit projects worth sharing: 1. Better local connections to Metrolink...Much needed. 2. Extended local bus service into underserved areas. It looks like residents of the southern half of Ladera Ranch, Portola Hills, Newport Coast, Turtle Rock, Northwood Irvine, and Orange Park Acres can plan on having a bus stop near their homes in the future. Anybody planning a retreat trip to Irvine Lake will also have the choice to ride the bus there in the future. 3. Additional Bravo! (OCTA BRT) and OC Express commuter bus service (e.g. South County-Long Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita-Irvine). That SR 241 out of Santa Margarita during rush hour can get a bit heavy at times. 4. Local city shuttles connecting major activity centers to Metrolink and other trunk transit lines. 5. Installation of a 3rd track on the BNSF RR connecting the OC to the Inland Empire through the Yorba Linda area. Additional track switches in the Corona area. More Metrolink service anyone? 6. TOD, TOD, and TOD. The OC is going for transit oriented development; let's make sure the job/housing is balanced this time. No more traffic on the 91 or 57, please. 7. Last, but not least, OC mountain bikers can plan on having an upgraded bikeway between Trabuco Canyon and Holy Jim Trail in the future (Holy Jim Trail goes up the Santa Ana Mountains, connects to the Main Divide TKTR, which goes up to Santiago Pk. Santiago Pk offers a spectacular 360 view of SoCal.
