I disagree with that to an extent. OC's major streets are wider, but their neighborhood streets often are not built for traffic and they don't have any alternate routes parallel to the major ones. Given the same amount of traffic their streets would do worse than LA.
And even if that's debatable what is beyond debate is how unsatisfactory their streets are for pedestrians. Some of their streets flow so well because traffic lights are a mile apart. Great if you're driving, but how inconvenient for pedestrians to have to walk an extra half mile or so (1/4 mile each way) just to cross the street? And then their streets are almost like freeways with 50 mph speed limits and cars routinely driving 10 mph above that.

I see so much jaywalking where I live in Orange County. Luckily more crosswalks/traffic lights have been going up. Even still, I see many people jaywalking despite traffic lights being within easy reach.

Some upcoming events I heard about:
SAVE OUR BUS SERVICE RALLY – Thursday, June 4, 6 pm Former Bus Terminal Plaza, triangular corner of 5th St., Santa Ana Blvd., & Ross
Please join us this Thursday for a rally to call attention to our huge bus service cuts. We will be letting people know about the cuts, encouraging people to attend the June 8 OCTA board meeting vote, and advocating for more bus funding. We will have information on the latest versions of cuts at OCTA.
Thank you for spreading the word to as many friends and bus riders as you can so we can let people know how important this issue is.
We still need a PA system and someone to set it up! Also let us know if you can volunteer to: Be a safety monitor, pass out literature, help people sign up, translate the speeches into Spanish. We’ll have a final event planning meeting tomorrow, Wednesday June 3 at 7 pm. Send us a quick note to let us know if you’ll be attending and/or volunteering at the rally, and please call or e-mail us for the final event planning meeting location if you can attend it. Please SPREAD the WORD!
OCTA Bus Service Reduction Vote – Monday, June 8, 2009 – 9 am OCTA Headquarters, 1st Floor, Rm. 154, 600 S. Main St., Orange
Please get as many people as you can to attend this last meeting on the service cuts. The Board is not expecting the public to show up, so it will send a great message to them that we care about our service! Even if you can’t speak, your presence will make a huge difference.
Let OCTA know what effect these cuts will have for you and your best suggestions on which cuts would hurt least. We are asking them to preserve some of the Night Owl service, the first and last buses each day of the week, service where there are no other routes close by.
Please SPREAD the WORD!
WHAT YOU CAN DO 1. Attend our June 4, 6pm rally and bring some friends. 2. Attend the June 8, 9 am OCTA Board meeting vote 3. Send this e-mail to your friends. 4. Urge your legislators to restore transit funding (see below)

From OCTA: With the loss of the State Transit Assistance program, the only ongoing source of state funding for day-to-day transit operations, OCTA expects to lose more than
$17 million through June. Next year, $100 million over the next five years.
Even if the fares are doubled, more would have to be done to protect the service.
How you can Help:
1. Attend the Rally: June 4 @ 6 p.m. and bring friends 2. Attend the OCTA Board meeting vote 3. Let friends know about this webpage and email the link 4. Urge your state legislators to restore transit funding

Due to work obligations, no. However, I'll be offering my help with TTC with this campaign project.

How long do you think these cut backs will last? More than ten years?

These aren't even including the March 2010 potential cuts. I hope Will Kempton finds some funding under some of those stones he's overturning.

I cannot speculate how long, but The Transit Coalition and the Transit Advocates of Orange County need your help to reduce the impact of further cuts. This will be approached with the two goals of determing: 1) our own "least painful" cuts and 2) funding proposals to eliminate the need for further cuts. Visit this site to see how you can help:

It's too bad the OCTA took one step in making access to LA harder by shortlining OCTA 60 at Long Beach VA instead of the Metro Blue Line Transit Mall; I know 577X fills in that gap, but why bother with an extra bus trip.

nickv, the idea of an Orange County transit advocacy group is great and all, but last time they announced a meeting they wouldn't tell the public where it was. Read the comments here. www.transitrideroc.com/2009/06/transit-advocates-meeting-tonighSteven announced it and I asked where it was. He said: That really pissed me off because I thought something great was starting up, but if they're not inviting the public, what's the point? I've talked to people at OCTA bus stops about cuts in casual conversation, and they care. But if they're not telling people where this stuff is happening, how are they expected to get involved? Time and place of meetings must be freely available. No one should be required to send an email or call to RSVP or find out where it is. All they need to do is show up.

I suggest asking Bart Reed about this or contacting the group directly at (714) 607-0012 as I'm not directly connected with this group.
