so are we talking about gold line eastside extension + whittier HRT or a replacement of the eastside extension? if its combining the two... i think the middle SGV is being short changed [along with most of the county] I honestly think that the HRT extension should be the next thing built on the eastside, this purple line extension replacing any goldline for now. The esgoldline currently runs along the 1st/3rd SR-60 corridor (which is different than the whit/olympic/I-5 corridor), and should stay that way in lieu of this purple line HRT eastside extension gaining traction. I also think that the central SGV is also deserving of some serious upgrades beyond a rapid line on garvey. I think an HRT line can be built along the current busway space (with a new HOV lane/busway being placed on the current buffer lane onthe 10) from DTLA to El Monte and eventually out to Pomona. This would be the central SGV trunk line for metro service, could be built quite cheaply, and would access a ton of dense working class areas. Right now is the time to be discussing these things and hleping some of them gain some traction. Good conversations. BTW, cool maps jerjoz, thanks! ;D

What if the political powers that be insist on a Gold Line to Montclair before a Gold Line to Whittier or wherever the ESGL will end up? Or before a HRT to Whittier?
Lots of consensus building, folks, east of Downtown...

Jerard--I think your streetcar idea is something that is a short-term idea that deserves some merit , and might even be needed long-term whether we have an Eastside Subway or not. I'm trying to figure out, though, whether it's a bizarre coincidence or you're "making a statement" when your map looks like a giant dollar sign... It is a coincidence, albeit a humorous one. ;D

On another level, and perhaps on the Eastside thread, I can't help but wonder (after seeing the above map of the former and current Eastside rail lines) if the Eastside is best served by a LRT to serve the 60 freeway corridor to the 605 as well as a Red Line Subway extension to the southeast adjacent to the I-5 freeway corridor. I really DON'T, and will not any time soon, favor a LRT to the City of Whittier that has poor ridership, is slow, and has few major pedestrian destinations.
$1 billion for an Eastside LRT to the 605 (or even beyond to Diamond Bar) along the 60 freeway would have lots of pedestrian destinations--I drive the freeway frequently, and it has some density to match the 210 freeway that would benefit from the Foothill Gold Line.
Another $1 billion for an Eastside HRT to provide an alternative for the megadensity of southeast L.A. would also benefit the region. I just don't see a lot of huge ridership between the current Eastside LRT terminus and Whittier that couldn't be better helped by enhanced Amtrak/Metrolink (and future CAHSR) service.

Yes, that census tract points to the massive crush of population between Slauson and Firestone in the Southeast. This hyper-dense corridor extends from the Blue Line eastward to Downey. In addition to the number of residents, that area is plagued with traffic problems associated with the suburban-style street grid, which is incapable of handling all that traffic. (Major east-west streets passing through this area are spaced one mile apart.)
I still say there is great justification for a branch of the Blue Line heading into that corridor. It could branch east along Slauson to Huntington Park, with a bend southeast along the UP ROW that heads toward Downey.

Justifying an Eastside subway based on the large number of undocumented workers that would use it is sure to be used by the subway opposition to slam the project. I can see it now, "TAXPAYER DOLLARS GOING TO BUILD A SUBWAY TO SHUTTLE ILLEGALS BACK AND FORTH!!!" Just another hurdle to overcome. Nothing we can't handle

Man, there's so much BS about immigration out there that I wish this forum had a topic for it so I could rant all day, haha.
