this morning from north hollywood to valley collage, the orange line roadway was closed down. no actual work done, just equipment sitting in the busway.
the buses were diverted to street running between those two stations. this got me thinking, if the orange line were ever to be converted [in about 5o years...] this method could be used while the busway is replaced with rail.
does anyone know how long this closure will be? seems to add a bit of time to the overall run as we were sitting in traffic waiting at the lights.

I heard about this closure last Wednesday at the Metro SFV sector meeting. It seems the Orange Line doesn't last long. We had this repave before during the first summer (2006) where heat and the weight of the buses caused the pavement to buckle. Now with the slow order still in effect, it is the braking (and accelerating) at intersections where there is no cemented portion that is mushing the pavement.
I got an idea, give the buses a safe green light so that the bus operators don't have to be so cautious at intersections and have to brake the buses which would spare the life of the asphalt. As for the running time of the Orange Line, going from Van Nuys to North Hollywood only took 2 minutes longer than on the busway. 2 minutes is the traffic cycle on Chandler in which if the buses misses a cycle, it is forced to add 2 minutes to its commute. Some intersections are on 1 minute cycles.
