You may be wondering what's going on with high speed rail right now. Currently, the focus is on the Bay Area Peninsula. The HSR Authority is holding meetings and scoping sessions and all that jazz, and a vocal minority of those opposed to the train have solidified.
Much of this drama is being chronicled at the California High Speed Rail Blog.
But one thing I wanted to point out is how far the opposition will go to lie and mischaracterize the high speed train route. This article appeared tonight on Palo Alto Online.

I am astonished at the lengths protesters will go to lie about a rail project. They don't even take the time to research the most basic elements of this project.
CAHSR was always going to be fully grade separated. At no point will the trains obstruct the ability for cars, pedestrians or bike riders to cross the tracks. They will go over or under all roads. Some less active roads might even closed completely.
Keep in mind that people actually went out in broad daylight and announced these things to anyone who would listen. People who are sitting on the fence about this issue may be swayed by their blatant mistruths.
How do you even combat something like that? Is it futile to respond at all?

Protestors march against high-speed rail
'Rolling wall' of trains would divide community, residents say
Comparing high-speed rail along Palo Alto's transit corridor to the Berlin Wall, more than 50 protestors marched from Lytton Plaza to City Hall tonight to protest the California High Speed Train San Francisco to San Jose Project.
...
The number of trains that would come through the area during peak hours -- as many as one train every three minutes -- would make it impossible for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians to cross the tracks during those times, protestors said.
