Transit: Reconnecting Calimesa
A Better Inland Empire, TTC's Riverside Project, is kicking off a campaign to restore public transit service to the small, but diverse City of Calimesa in northern Riverside County.
Riverside Transit Agency Bus Route 36 served the City of Calimesa, once providing local service in the city and connecting the region with Yucaipa to the north and Beaumont to the south. RTA is mandated by the Riverside County Transportation Commission to meet productive performance standards for its bus lines. Route 36 has not met several of them and the route was approved to be cancelled for the June, 2009 RTA Service Change.
A conceptual replacement bus idea: Branded 30 ft./26 seat bus with branding and destination headsign to maximize ridership.
Although low performace levels may warrant bus route cancellations, we believe a mass transit line through Calimesa is needed to maintain transit mobility for this area. Route 36 was the only public bus route serving the City of Calimesa and the only transit link between Yucaipa and Beaumont.
Judging by the low productivity levels of RTA Route 36, the new bus route that will reconnect Calimesa and rebridge the gap between Beaumont and Yucaipa should be operated or funded locally and be realigned to serve more activity centers.

The City of Beaumont agreed to launch a Pass Transit Express Route on June 22, 2009, connecting central Beaumont to central Calimesa. This line would replace RTA Route 36. Unfortunately, a multitude of problems become clear as one looks at the Pass Transit Express Route bus schedule. A TTC ABIE map of a better route was developed last year during our Transit: Connecting Calimesa campaign and will be presented again. Pass Transit also has excessive bus trip length issues that was addressed at an RTA Board Meeting. Most of their routes include one-way sections and require backtracking. Riverside Transit Agency staff have agreed to study the area. A TTC ABIE map was developed to help address this. I'm working with the Public Transit Campaign Coordinator of California Public Interest Research Group (CalPIRG UCR chapter) to adress these issues.
