Metrolink has introduced a new ticket type that will go in effect starting June 1st. Here are the details. metrolinktrains.com/fares/?id=17This seems like Metrolink's strategy for combating the gains a family receives by carpooling to their destination. Let's analyze it. Let's take a medium distance trip like say, Anaheim to Los Angeles. Two adult and two youth round-trip tickets would cost $35 on weekends. Since the weekend pass costs $29, the family saves six dollars. The caveat? No transfer privileges to connecting transit agencies. Yikes. The longer the trip, the better the deal. Also, it's a better deal when four adults travel together. Let's say four people need to travel from Lancaster to LA and back. Regular weekday fares would make this a $65 trip. With the new pass, that trip is much more appealing for a group of four. There's also a possibility of stopovers. The pass is essentially a four-person day pass. However, I can't think of many Metrolink stations which are destinations in and of themselves. I guess the key is to market it well.
