I thought I note something of interest about an episode of The Simpsons that aired last Sunday, 14 March 2010 on Fox. The show starts with a spoof of a cartoon produced in 1957 by the Automobile Manufacturer's Association (as seen in the beginning of the documentary "Taken for a Ride") and GM's "Design for Dreaming. Later in the episode, Bart and Milhouse discovered the abandoned Springfield Subway with working cars. The cars in that episode are modeled after the PE design.
BTW, I had to take the liberty to update the Wiki for the episode and Pacific Electric to reflect the reference to our own abandoned system.

I saw that too, it was cool. That was pretty funny how the anti-subway (pro-freeway) propaganda film exaggerated the negative aspects of public transit. (Taking the subway spreads disease, because you're cramped in with sick people, and you're so close to the next guy, you're practically kissing him!)

That episode can be viewed here. The characters in the spoof are "Bus Stop Bill", "Subway Sam" who is "packed like a tuna on the Springfield Metro Line, and "Motorcar Mel" cruising in his plutonium powered auto at 130. The segment where Bart and Milhouse goes into the abandoned Springfield Subway is at 15:00 (15 minutes).

It's no "Lisa rides the bus."
