Suprised that I hadn't seen this yet. Possible that I missed it in another Thread? and this Via LAist - "The recommendations come out of a study seeking solutions to improve north-south transit corridors in the Valley along the Reseda, Sepulveda, Van Nuys and Lankershim/San Fernando arteries--all connect to the Orange Line--in three phases. Phase 1 includes signal re-timing, lane restriping and bus stop relocations as well as the already-in-servce 902 line. Phase II entails capital improvements like roadway widening and transit enhancements at bus stops. Phase III would be long-term improvements such as constructing a five-mile median busway between Burbank Boulevard and Plummer Street and extending the Metro Red Line from its current terminus in the NoHo Arts District to Sylmar."

This has been suggested a few times over the years unless I'm mistaken. It would be a great extension, terminating hopefully at the Sylmar Metrolink station.
Unfortunately, it's way at the bottom in terms of priority, and potentially years away from ever being a reality. Still, if we could at least get someone to start studying it...

Bad idea. It completely derails a full 405 corridor from Sylmar to Long Beach.
LA is a polycentric, not monocentric city. We can't have every line running into Downtown.

You can definitely have both, jdrcrasher. Check out Damien Goodmon's map and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I wouldn't extend the Purple Line to Sylmar.
I'd have a light-rail from Sylmar to LAX via the Sepulveda Pass.

Light rail via the Sepulveda Pass is going to be very costly in both construction and higher operating costs. You would save money by going via tunnel from UCLA to Van Nuys / Ventura. The grade would be less than 1% with a straight shot, so it would take less than 5 minutes to go from the Valley to UCLA.

But again, the whole 405 freeway is congested, and we need an alternative from Sylmar to Long Beach.
