la.streetsblog.org/2014/06/18/the-los-angeles-times-and-its-disgraceful-reporting-on-high-speed-rail/Now, this is probably going to kick off a flamewar with culvercitylocke and die-hard Republicans, but I'm finding myself mostly in agreement with the author on this. The main points of the article: - Local stations don't necessarily slow express trains down (i.e. the sort of trains needed to reach the 2hr 40min design goal) as long as passing tracks are included in the station designs.
- Earthquake risk is not necessarily significant given a statewide early warning network and automatic response systems, which are all engineering measures. Japan is cited as an example with a flawless safety record.
- Polls showing positive response to HSR are mostly ignored outright by the Times.
Also, posting here since this seems to be the closest related forum I can actually post in, with my account still awaiting approval after months of nothing. *sigh*
