YEEEHAW! Board item for the March 15th, 2007 Operations Committee Meeting: www.metro.net/board/Items/2007/03_March/20070314OPItem32.pdf"...authorizing the Chief Executive Officer to award a firm fixed price Contract No. OP39601922, with JM Fiber Optics, Inc., the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, to replace the existing Transit Passenger Information System on the Metro Red Line for an amount not to exceed $2,228,941, inclusive of sales tax; and executing contract modifications in the amount not to exceed $222,901." Yep, it looks as if we'll finally have some useful information on the Red Line.

This system is actually really complicated. On one part, it ties in with security. On another part it ties in with Rail Operations and a whole other bunch of operations. Just read the background on the board report. Yes, once upon a time, it might have been simple, but with so much infrastructure, the simple result is actually a very complicated system architecture.

"but with so much infrastructure" - I think it should read "but with so much security fears"

"but with so much infrastructure" - I think it should read "but with so much security fears" So how will this system be used in that respect? Will there be a message going, "HEY YOU, IN PERSHING SQUARE! YEAH YOU, WITH THE MERCURY!!! JUST STOP IT, OKAY???"

^ Per review of the report, on the link posted above, the new TPIS will also announce: - Emergency instructions and evacuation services
I'm sure the purchase of TPIS was aided by the new security funding approved by the federal government. And, probably recommended as well.
