Unfortunate for all of Los Angeles, but tutor perini also won the contract for phase three, the purple line is so screwed. An unforeseen delay has already occurred for the infamous tutor perini at century city, so an eighteen month road closure of constellation isn’t beginning until August. Since metro so dumbly awarded the contract to them, I expect phase two and phase three to be completed six years late and six billion over budget—each. But TP is proceeding with demolition for he staging area while school is out for the summer at BHHS, since it is TP I’m surprised they did t screw that up too and get themselves a year delay as a result! I do not feel good at all about the hiring of Tutor-Perini, or Tutor-Saliba, or whatever they call themselves these days. That company just got called out in San Francisco for using the wrong kind of rails on the Central Subway project. The rails are now being pulled out and replaced. It's a big cause for concern when a proposal like Tutor's Phase III proposal comes in so cheap. Hopefully Metro's lawyers made the contract with Tutor air-tight.

Wasn’t tutor also responsible for the worst tunneling construction f**k up in the USA the Alaskan way viaduct? And let’s not forget how badly they built he metro red line!

Here is the status of the Purple Line Extension Segment 1 (as of July 2018): • Overall Project Progress is 37% complete. • At the Wilshire/Western Retrieval Shaft, excavation and bracing continues with Level A strut installation and utility hanging in the south, and Level B waler installation in the north. • Concrete wall pours at Wilshire/La Brea Station needed to support TBM assembly are scheduled to complete at end of June 2018. Installation of rebar, embeds and HDPE continue along with mining support equipment in the south yard. • Excavation to Level D at the Wilshire/Fairfax Station continues, along with waler and strut installation. Excavation is now clear of the Paleo zone (Elevation 105’). Alimak installation to Level C and work on the pipe canopy tunnel eye is in progress. • Station excavation under the concrete deck at Wilshire/La Cienega Station continues. Work on the permanent power duct bank and hanging utilities moves forward. • Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) were delivered to Los Angeles in December 2017. TBM assembly at Wilshire/La Brea Station is scheduled for July 2018. Tunneling is planned to start in September 2018. Off topic: I was shocked that Crenshaw Blvd is closed for through traffic for seven weeks at Leimert Park. The construction notice says it's for "street restoration". But why seven weeks? Anyway, Leimert Park looks like a warzone right now. I feel for the residents there. There is alot to do. Here is a photo taken by Metro in late June: Crenshaw Boulevard restoration workThey have to remove the concrete deck and steel beams underneath, then they go and fill in and compact with dirt and gravel to rebuild the base for the road. Then you pour the new curbs, gutters, and sidewalk. Lastly the pave the road and reopen it. It takes a while but the road will look brand new when they are done.

The projects in jeopardy are those which do not yet have FFGAs (Full Funding Grant Agreements). As the article explains:

The DOT has also imposed additional conditions that have resulted in an increase to the estimated cost of the Purple Line by $190.9 million. Metro doesn’t have a letter of no prejudice yet? Uh oh. With Trump slow rolling FTA funding that could mean that receiving federal funds for segment 3 will happen later rather than sooner. If at all.

I'd guess ~10 percent for the new tie in work. Maybe 20% if you include the new station in Little Tokyo. But that depends whether you're talking about time or cost, and I'm pretty sure Metro is reporting costs, or more accurately value of the work completed.

Build a new bridge. Build a new trench. And then Build new rail tie ins? Bridge and trench and demo would comprise a lot of work for a 3 km line, at least thirty percent I would guess.

They are very different projects. Both projects include a pair of bored tunnels, three cut-and-cover stations, and SEM crossovers.
The Purple Line Segment One is a longer project but is much simpler. It consists of a virtually straight tunneled route with a single tie-in. The only big complication is the expansion of the rail yard (in the Arts District).
The Regional Connector, on the other hand, includes three tie-ins (the wye connects to two separate branches), a new bridge, a 90-degree turn, a significant amount of cut-and-cover tunneling, and a much more complicated nest of utilities to relocate. Also, the three lines being tied together were built over the course of 25 years, and the Regional Connector needs to bridge the technologies of these three lines (for example, signaling and block detection).

Several months late but the ace gallery is finally scheduled for demo on sept 12. Once it’s gone, they can build the BH staging yard. Piles anticipated to start in 2019 for BH station and decking is anticipated to be 13 weekend closures for installation. Then 18 months to excavate the station box. Perhaps that means a tunneling drive for section 2 as soon as 2021.

For Section 3, they are doing separate contracts for the tunnels and the stations. The tunnels contract has already been awarded, and its start is delayed due to the delay in getting a letter of no prejudice from the federal government. The stations contract has not yet been awarded. So it seems they expect to start on the tunnels before starting on the stations.

It seems to be the case, with the tunnel contractor needing to provide excavation support walls at the ends of the station boxes. I guess if we can get a copy of the construction plan we could be more clear.

The tbms have been ready to go since August, I wonder if there is some part of the machinery that did not pass inspection and they’re waiting on a replacement from Germany?
