While I personally like the TAP system, it's creating great confusion among tourists and new riders. Most of the confusion is arising from the lack of fare gates at the rail stations.
Today I ran into a family of tourists. Unfortunately I didn't get to help them much because the train had just arrived and would close its doors in less than 10 seconds. The father only had bought one TAP card and he didn't know what to do with it. There were at least three more members (wife and two or more teenage daughters) in the family. I tried to tell them that they needed a separate TAP card for everyone. (Yes, some of you probably don't know this but you can't share a TAP card or use it to pay for more than one person.) He was asking where to tap it (we were at the elevated platform already) and whether to do so multiple times for the family.
All of this would have been avoided if fare gates were installed. There would be no confusion regarding where to TAP and sharing the card and also no chance of unintentionally failing to pay (such as when transferring).

Unfortunately, I don't think any of the Phase 1 Expo stations will be gated, although I believe all Phase 2 will be. In all, we'll have 40 stations that will never have gates. It will be interesting to hear the results from locking all of the subway gates and its effect on ridership and revenues. Overall, there need to be more TVM's at the stations, especially end stations like Culver City. I have a TAP card, but have to use the TVM to load a day pass from my stored value, which is a bit of a pain, especially when there are people ahead who are new to the system. We may get a few more newbies on Expo with the new Flyaway service from La Brea station opening this week. Anyone notice people with luggage?

How exactly does having a gate solve the confusion about requiring one card per person? I cant think of a single other flat fare system that imposes such a ridiculous requirement. Of course, I cant think of a single other system period that requires payment to transfer inside a subway system. The gates arent the problem, the idiotic fare system is.
