Gold Line currently operates with 18 2-car trains running 6-minute headways in peak hours.
Azusa extension needs 6 more 2-car trains.
Current Breda rolling stock consists of 50 cars.
Therefore, the current Breda rolling stock is enough to run 6-minute headways from East LA to Azusa using 24 2-car trains, albeit leaving only 2 spare cars.
This means that the Gold Line to Azusa can open to revenue service in 2015 using the existing Breda rolling stock soon after the construction is finished.
So, the new-LRV-delivery problem is highly exaggerated!

Metro had all but one or two Bredas out on the line Saturday for the Union Station celebration. I suppose they could turn back some trains at East Pasadena to stretch the supply--Pacific Electric used to do that at Monrovia, sending every other train all the way to Glendora. And there will be a crossover just east of the Monrovia station where a turnback could be done.

The East LA trains noticeably way more empty than Pasadena Trains.

At this evening's GLFE Board meeting, there was a report of a visit to the Palmdale LRV assembly plant--apparently some of the Kinki-Sharyo cars are already under construction.

Just heard a brief bulletin on KNX news: Apparently the problems with the Palmdale Kinki Nippon plant not being acceptable to some special interest group has been solved. LA Mayor Garcetti's name was mentioned. We await furthern developments.

Check the Expo pages for an update on the Palmdale plant situation. Looks like things are settled and the plant will be going into production next year.

Has anybody seen the new cars running on the Green Line for tests? Latest report (heard at the GLFE meeting Wednesday evening) was that if all goes well, production will start in June, and it should be four cars a month from then on. There was also a report that Expo II is running behind schedule, and if this is true that should mean that the first cars can come to Foothill.

Latest report I´ve seen is that when revenue service to Azusa begins, half the trains will run all the way to Azusa, while the remainder will turn back at Sierra Madre Villa. This is similar to the Pacific Electric schedules of days gone by, when every other train would turn back at Monrovia and the rest would go on to Glendora. I should note that the Gold Line Azusa-Citrus station will be within a mile and a fraction of the historic site of the PE Glendora station.

There are now seven of the new KS LRVs lined up in the Monrovia yard. When I went by there this afternoon, four had their pantographs up. So far, I haven't seen any of them moving. Highest number in the group is 1010.

Someone posted a photo of Metro 1011 in the main Monrovia shop building last week, so it looks like the production is moving along at Palmdale. No sightings of the new cars out on the main line yet--they've only been seen in the yard.

Add KS car 1012 to the fleet--it was in the Monrovia yard today. We may get one or two more before the end of the year. Regarding the possibility of every other car turning back at Sierra Madre Villa when revenue operation starts; that probably won't bother my daughter, who lives in Glendora and presently takes the Metrolink train from Covina. 12-minute headway is still better than Metrolink, and it's much better if she has to leave work in the middle of the day.

Latest report is that test runs during the day will start today (Dec. 19) and Sunday. I'll be watching to see if this continues into weekdays. They're supposed to start running the Kinki-Sharyo cars for their "burn-in" mileage next week, too. Pre-revenue operation is planned to begin in mid-January.

Metro 1013 is in the yard at Monrovia. Still haven't seen any of the new cars running, but I may not have been in the area at the right time.

Saw 1014 running through Arcadia this evening. Unless there are gaps, we now have a dozen of the new cars at Div. 24 in Monrovia.
No activity observed today (Sat. Jan. 9), but 1015 is in the Div. 24 yard.

AFAIK, none of the KS cars have been accepted for revenue service. The existing P2550s will be used, with increased headway.

At least four of the new cars have been used in revenue service--I rode 1013 on opening day, and there was another two car train when I rode from Arcadia to APU-Citrus and back on Mar. 9. I've seen photos of Metro 1020 in postings from the Expo project, so it looks like the Palmdale plant is rolling 'em out now.

Hopped on 1005 last night. It was mildly confusing, as it pulled up to Union Station with the "TEST TRAIN" banners running but passengers aboard, right when the Azusa-bound train was due. Apparently the conductor realized something was amiss as it began displaying the correct destination shortly afterward. Of course, the northbound trains were running close to 30 minute intervals as the Gold Line was down to 1 track in South Pasadena due to maintenance, so the train wound up being standing-room only. Agreed that it was very spacious, and I couldn't believe how quiet it was.

Last week I rode the Gold Line from end to end. All the trains I rode were two-car Bredas, but I spotted two three-car Bredas and two two-car KS trains.

New arrivals at Monrovia (Divn. 24). KS units 1055 and 1057 were in the yard on Wed. Nov. 16. Historic note: 1057 was the highest number in the Pacific Electric wooden interurban fleet.

1063 and 1064 are on the property (I had some supplies to gather at the Monrovia Home Depot, so I did a brief inspection at Div. 24.) When we get to 1065, that will remind us fans of the 1950s LA music scene of "1065 E. Vernon Ave." the long ago location of the Dolphin's of Hollywood Record Shop. 1066 is a significant year for students of English history, being the time of the Norman Invasion and the Battle of Hastings.

1065, 1066, 1067 and 1068 are "in the house" (actually the yard) at Div 24. Two more and they'll outnumber the Nippon Sharyo cars.

What effect are these new cars having on operations of the Gold Line? Are they extending the length of peak period trains, where they need the extra capacity?

What effect are these new cars having on operations of the Gold Line? Are they extending the length of peak period trains, where they need the extra capacity? The new Kinkisharyo cars are currently extending the Gold Line fleet to meet the headways for the longer route to Azusa. The long plan is to replace ALL Bredas with Kinkisharyo trains in time for the opening of the Regional Connector because the Bredas are incompatible (off spec) with the balance of the system outside of the Gold Line. The Breda P2550 were constructed overweight by the Italian firm and cannot be supported by older Blue Line bridges when the two lines are joined as one route. Streetsblog Oct 2009
