The Metro board has voted this week 7/27/2017 to convert the entire bus fleet to electric by the year 2030. This is if the technology is proved reliable. Think that they mean battery powered buses. We know that trolley coaches would work today but the RTD tried that twenty five years ago but were shot down.

Yes, battery-electric buses. The first two lines to receive them will be the Orange and Silver Lines, which will use en-route fast-chargers during lay-overs on Metro property. The anticipation is that by 2020-2022 battery density and cost will improve to the point of a standard 40-foot bus charging overnight and running all day without recharging. Here's one of Foothill Transit's original Proterra battery-electric buses under its fast-charging hood during layover at the Pomona Transit Center. And here's BYD's prototype 60-foot articulated battery-electric bus.
