It is with no small measure of sadness that I witness the passing of route 471 into oblivion come this February 1st, 2004. This was the line on which I took my first bus rides as a child growing up in Hacienda Heights in the 70's. It may have followed a slightly different route back then, but it was a route filled with fond memories.
This was my rite of passage into independence, when my parents and those of my best friend trusted us enough to allow us to take the bus - unescorted - into Whittier to what was at that time the "coolest hobby shop ever" near the old Quad shopping center on Whittier Boulevard.
I'll never forget the frustration and confusion at trying to figure out the timetables and etiquette that it took to master public transportation on the ol' RTD. But once we "got it", a whole new world window was opened, and we felt in some small measure masters of our own little domain. Farewell, 471.

That's a cool story.
I started taking the OCTA (Orange County) in the early 80s when they were still old GM buses and most of the routes were not accessible to the disabled.

Wow Dane, you made me think of the times I enjoyed the old RTD rides to and from LA from my hometown of Pasadena. I loved the old RTD. I remember a picture from a newspaper article (that I still have) of an conceptual RTD lightrail car for the then Long Beach-LA rail project AND a conceptual pic of the then planned RTD Downtown PeopleMover.
I wonder what downtown LA would've been like if they'd built the peoplemover? Any thoughts???

I also remember my first years in LA, and taking the RTD daily from Pasadena to downtown LA to work. The bus was always filled during rush hours. I didn't have a car, so the RTD was our way to get both to our jobs, and on weekends to see a movie or to go to a restaurant downtown LA. (I wonder how many people in recent years--pre Gold Line--would ever bother to take a bus from Pasadena to downtown.)
