I'm actually shocked Metro studied not just the south bound spur proposed by Andert but also a separate line (someone on another board was really passionate about this) and my own north bound spur idea which I never submitted to Metro comment and was only mentioned here in this very thread. I guess someone at Metro had been reading our posts after all.
And really rather predictably, Metro concluded no benefit on any of the spur options because they are not modeling any potential benefit on a further extension on SMB towards DTLA. So of course it doesn't make any sense... but that was kind of the point we made about the spur - it will make more sense later when we want to extend the spur.
It's like the Red Line Vermont station decision again - hybrid alignment makes perfect sense if you never consider the possibility of extending the line beyond the preferred alignment.

I'm pretty surprised they did a prelim study too. I thought all the points in red on the images felt a little passive aggressive haha. Unfortunately I think we can probably say goodbye to ever having a rail line down the rest of santa monica, and just hope for a BRT line (which itself may be a fool's hope due to the width of SaMo at some parts.

Could the Fairfax alternative be designed in such a way that they could potentially in the future add underground wyes at both Santa Monica/Fairfax and Santa Monica/highland for a future Santa Monica subway?

My understanding is that wyes basically need to be added in during initial construction or you're looking at a massive shutdown of the line for a full rebuild when you want to add them. That at least has been the discussion around wilshire/vermont, and the decision to not add a wye on the purple line for heavy rail for the santa monica route.
Either way, there is so much momentum for the hybrid alignment right now - particularly with it being WeHo's preference, whose EIFD metro would need to have any hope of accelerating this - that I don't see a realistic chance for fairfax or la brea to win out now.

The Gold line has been shut down for almost 3 years to construction a wye and rebuild a station at Little Tokyo. Does that answer the question? And even with that, we are still making a mistake because the wye doesn't include provision for WSAB.
If Crenshaw doesn't include a provision for wye and tail track going east on SMB, we will never see it. The station will be too busy to shut down for 3 years after Crenshaw line is fully operational.

We will do what every other city has done around the world and that is build another line and have connecting transfer pedestrian tunnels that will link the lines together. Eventually Santa Monica Blvd will need to have its own line. Does the hybrid alternative preclude such an effort? Absolutely not.

A draft EIR has been released for this line. Still three options. The Westchester yard will also be expanded. Groundbreaking would be in 2041 with completion by 2049.
