Daily Breeze By Andrea Woodhouse Posted: 11/15/2009 06:02:19 AM PST First few paragraphs here rest at Daily Breeze (got to give them some advertising impressions) " El Segundo city officials are seething over a county pitch to build a train maintenance facility in town as part of an estimated $1.7 billion proposed light rail project. And leaders of tiny El Segundo, a scrappy town if there ever was one, have all but promised to sue should the Metropolitan Transportation Authority proceed with plans for a rail yard near the corner of Rosecrans Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard. "I am confident that I'll have full support of my colleagues should litigation be necessary," Mayor Kelly McDowell said. The facility - envisioned for about 15 acres of a former industrial site now designated as the second phase of megashopping center Plaza El Segundo - is an element of a large-scale mass transit project designed to ease freeway congestion in the Crenshaw Corridor and improve access to Los Angeles International Airport. This is a real toughie, and absolutely no surprise. Kelly McDowell is a good guy, and he's right that El Segundo keeps getting dumped on with respect to power plants, sewage treatment plants and maintenance yards. He's also been a fighter for this line and for a Green Line to LAX and the South Bay Galleria.
So, too, are the good people of Westchester who pointed out that the alternate maintenance yard site at Hindry was problematic and not too smart, either. Some of them DID, however, suggest that a maintenance yard just north of the Century/Aviation station might be an alternative as well.
What do you all think?

Many people have envisioned that as a more appropriate place not just for the Crenshaw Line, but also the Green Line maintenance yard and a regional transit maintenance center.
If they build it as a consolidated (Green & Crenshaw) intermodal (bus and rail) facility they could go to work on it next year using stimulus funds and there are likely to be maintenance cost savings. It would also allow them to sell the current land of the Green Line maintenance yard (and possibly one of the bus divisions if they relocate it). In the case of the Green Line maintenance yard, perhap a willing buyer is the company that developed the apartments next to it or the Air Force.

Sorry about my cluelessness, Damien, but could you please elaborate a wee bit as to where "that" is for the maintenace yard/regional transit maintenance center?
Are you referring to the Century/Aviation-adjacent site, or El Segundo or somewhere else?
Again, sorry about my cluelessness on this one--thanx!

Thanks...and I wonder if that option will end up seeing more light of day as both El Segundo and Westchester says "no way" to either of the two sites as the Metro Crenshaw team starts trying to figure out a location to meet its needs and to please all parties.

^ I am looking south. I can see my neighbor's backyard. Not sure how that is relevant to the discussion.
