Ok, I've been wondering something:
When they say the Purple Line is funded to get to the VA/Federal/Barrington area, does that mean it's covered by the $4.1 billion Measure R funds only OR the $4.1 billion Measure R funds + matching federal funding?
In other words, will it cost $4 billion or $8 billion to get to Brentwood?
I'm interested because I gather that it's likely that the subway will receive Federal New Starts matching funds. If it cost $4 billion to get to Brentwood, that would mean you could get there with $2 billion Measure R funds and $2 billion federal funds. That would leave a potential $4 billion for WeHo/SM phases ($2 + $2 again).
If the cost to get the subway to Brentwood requires $8 billion, that would leave no identified revenue source at all for SM or WeHo. That's a big difference and it means the likelihood of those further phases happening is A LOT lower.
Can someone in the know clarify?

According to Metro's website -
The AA estimated the costs of the two subway alternatives as $6.1 billion for the Wilshire Subway Alternative all the way to Santa Monica and $9.0 billion for the Wilshire/West Hollywood Subway Alternative all the way to Santa Monica (in 2008 dollars). These cost estimates are being updated in the Draft EIS/EIR.
The passage of Measure R in November 2008 creates a source of funding for the project. It is anticipated that Measure R will generate $40 billion over the next 30 years. The Measure R expenditure plan allocates money to a variety of transportation projects throughout the County over that time period. While it does not provide funding for the full implementation of either subway alternative, it does provide $4.1 billion for the Westside Subway Extension down Wilshire to around the I-405 Freeway. -----
In other words, the 4.1 billion comes only from Measure R and does not include any additional money from the feds. It will cost 4.1 billion to get to Brentwood.
Therefore, you are correct in that if the city did get matching funds, there would be enough money to complete the Purple line to Santa Monica and perhaps, a leg of the West Hollywood or "Pink" line (but not the entire thing).
