Metro has tried hyping transit as an accessory to personal fitness before, but Sweden puts a new twist on getting people to take the subway stairs instead of those pesky escalators (courtesy of a link on the Metro Source blog)... See the wonderful and amusing YouTube video here.

Haha what, forget the stairs. Some dude came out of the subway with two dogs. Haha. How do we get that here? I want a dog In any case, it would never happen here due to liability issues. Once some idiot tries to bust some crazy moves on the stairs Metro will be sued and we'll all be living in huts. The best solution is to simply outlaw idiocy.

well, I don't know about "bust a move" lawsuits; it seems like you could get lawsuits from people getting hurt on escalators, too, so what's the difference?
but it was obvious to me ages ago that one of the reasons why the Japanese people are generally slim and fit — their life expectancy is ridiculously high — is because they do take the subway and because they walk up and down those steps.
they walk because a lot of Tokyo subway entrances don't have escalators, period. ( for example, the station entrance on my user pic is typical: three rings representing three subway lines, narrow steps, no escalator ). great for getting station entrances onto narrow sidewalks, convenient because it seems like they have a dozen station entrances for every one that we have in Los Angeles, and good for public health, too!
