"SPECIAL NOTICE REGARDING TRAIN DELAYS ON THE EVENING OF
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 10, 2007
Metrolink apologizes for the inconvenience these delays caused our passengers. Personnel has been assigned to the site as of this morning to closely monitor the switch and signal system at Union Station and will do so until this weekend when the switch machine that failed will be replaced. Exact details of train delays on October 10, 2007 are available by clicking on the link below. Also see below for a more detailed explanation of what occurred.
On October 10, 2007 at approximately 5:00 pm, a malfunction in the switching and signal system at Union Station caused significant delays to a large number of Metrolink trains leaving or entering the station. Specifically, a switch that is at the entrance of Union Station failed and was put into manual throw mode. This meant each movement of the switch had to be done by hand instead of being controlled automatically by Metrolink dispatchers. However, this upset the normal automatic sequence of switch movements that occur when a train enters or leaves the station and must pass through several switches or crossovers. It led to a more widespread signal failure at Union Station. Delays to trains were up to 90 minutes or more. Signals and Communications personnel responded to the malfunction but were unable to completely restore the Union Station switching and signal system until after 9:00 pm.
This passenger information program will post information daily about Metrolink trains on any line delayed 15 minutes or more at their final destination and the reason or reasons for the delay. For the purposes of this summary only, any train that is delayed less than 15 minutes at its final destination is considered to have not been significantly delayed and is considered as “operated on schedule”.
Information for trains operating Monday through Thursday will be posted the following day by 12 noon. Information for trains operating on Fridays will be posted the following Monday by 12 noon.
We hope this program will provide our passengers with a better understanding of why their train may have been delayed."
I'm surprised no one mentioned this; this isn't a normal day for Metrolink, all train lines had delays ranging from half hour to nearly two hours because of a problem with one track switch at Union Station. Ironically, the train with the longest delay doesn't even serve Union Station, the IEOC train 810 had a 114 minute delay! Mostly because this train has to wait for the OC 606 train for those wanting to follow the 91 Line route. The 606 had an 85 minute delay. Every weekday, Metrolink posts a log of train delays and they are usually stuff like freight interference, train malfunctions, or accidents, but 10 October 2007 had to be the worse I've seen. Anymore here rode the Metrolink trains after 5pm experienced this delay?
